Cardiac Arrest in the Workplace
According to OSHA, there are “220,000 victims of sudden cardiac arrest per year in the United States; about 10,000 sudden cardiac arrests occur at work.” OSHA further explains that waiting for the arrival of emergency medical system personnel results in only 5-7% survival.
CPR/AED Awareness Week (June 1-7), the American Red Cross encourages people to take CPR/AED training to learn how to respond should someone suffer cardiac arrest. Considering the amount of individuals across the nation that are affected by cardiac arrest, Crown Center Executive Suites wants to do their part to raise awareness and provide training.
FACT: Sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack and can happen at any age.
Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart’s normal rhythm is disrupted and cannot generate blood flow. You might see a person suddenly collapse, lose consciousness, and stop breathing. (A heart attack is when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle is blocked.)
One challenge with saving victims of cardiac arrest is that there is often a lag before bystanders take action. Statistics have shown that only 15 – 30 percent of people who experience sudden cardiac arrests outside of hospitals receive bystander Most commonly the reason is that they never received training.
One reason people do not learn to perform CPR is that they are concerned with performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The guidelines for performing CPR changed in recent years and those who do not feel comfortable, or who have not received formal training, should attempt hands-only CPR. The good news is that hands-only CPR is easy to learn and business owners and their employees can be prepared through education.
Ralph Page from Broward County Crime Stoppers will be providing several CPR training course leading up to CPR/AED Awareness week. The course is only $5 to be used to cover course material. Please contact the front desk to learn more.
