We Spring Forward on March 13th. How Do You Save Time In Your Business?
March 13 is the start of Daylight Saving Time (DST) for 2016. Contrary to popular belief, DST was not established for farmers, nor was it Benjamin Franklin’s idea (though he did support it). In reality, it was disruptive for farmers when it was implemented. Established in the US in March of 1918, DSL was a wartime measure meant to make better use of daylight and conserve energy.
Knowing the real reason behind the idea of springing forward (and being aware that mindful of the fact that time management is of particular importance for our clients as business owners, self-employed, and independent professionals), making better use of our time seemed like the perfect topic of discussion this month.
Perhaps the most notable make-the-most-of-your-time guru is Tim Ferris, author of The Four-Hour Work Week. Over time, Tim has shared his hacks with numerous publications. We are sharing a couple of Tim Ferris’s methods of making the most of your day. What are a few that stand out?
Know that your interest and ability in handling a job or task will vary over time. Instead of the constant push, plan for the ebbs and tides of interest and energy. How many times have you tried to push through but found yourself blindly staring at the computer screen? Or reviewing the product of little energy and interest only to find lackluster results? Plotting for these times is time better spent.
Stop putting off big decisions. While you need to weigh your decisions wisely, many of us waste a lot of time contemplating the what-ifs. Make a list of pros and cons, take the leap, and adjust accordingly. Now, we know it’s not as easy as one-two-three but being stuck is not progress. And sometimes we do make more out of a decision than is necessary so we count this one as an important reminder.
We asked around the Crown Center Executive Suites community and got this tip from our friend Debbie Wemyss (weemz) President of DW Consulting Solutions.
To start your work day off in a super-efficient way, begin the night before. The last work-related task I do every day is to prioritize for the next morning. As an entrepreneur, my tasks are numerous and never-ending. I separate them into three categories: Hot, Medium, Simmer. Anything that absolutely can’t wait that requires immediate action gets onto the ‘Hot’ list to accomplish FIRST. Then I move on to the other tasks in order of importance. The trick is to stay away from your Inbox until you’ve completed the Hot list! Then you’ll be sure to get the urgent things out of the way first.
